The Lesson Is in What the Evidence Has Been Established Upon from the Different Opinions

Allah, the Almighty, says: "O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad) and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. And if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination." (Surah An-Nisa, 4:59)

We hear and read from those who say that differing in opinions is a mercy, and others who say that taking differing views makes things easier for people. To those we say:

Firstly: Allah, the Almighty, says: "If you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger." Referring to Allah means referring to the Quran, and referring to the Messenger means referring to the Sunnah, which is undertaken by specialized scholars.

Secondly: Ease and simplicity lie in what Allah has prescribed in His Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger. Taking views that contradict the Quran and Sunnah is destructive. Allah, the Almighty, says: "And verily, this (i.e., Allah’s Commandments) is My straight path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His path. This He has ordained for you that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious)." (Surah Al-An'am, 6:153)

Some scholars say: "Not every difference of opinion carries significance; except for disagreement that has a worthy share of consideration."

Thirdly: We say taking opinions that have no evidence is considered making partners with Allah. Allah, the Almighty, says about the Christians: "They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires) and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Mary, while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded (in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)) to worship none but One Ilah (God - Allah) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be to Him (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)." (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:31)

When 'Adi bin Hatim, may Allah be pleased with him, heard this verse, he said, "O Messenger of Allah, we do not worship them." The Prophet (peace be upon him) responded: "Do they not make unlawful what Allah has made lawful, and you make it unlawful? And do they not make lawful what Allah has made unlawful, and you make it lawful?" He said, "Yes." The Prophet said, "That is their worship of them."

Some argue that times have changed, and it is only appropriate to adopt opinions that align with the desires of the people of this age. This statement implies that the Sharia is not suitable for every time and place, and that Allah's Sharia is not general for the earlier and later generations until the Day of Judgment. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever lives among you will see much discord, so adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs who come after me." We hear those who claim that disagreement is a form of mercy. We say that mercy is found in unity, not in disagreement. Allah says: "And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e., this Quran), and be not divided among yourselves." (Surah Al 'Imran, 3:103)

And He also says: "And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment." (Surah Al 'Imran, 3:105)

Furthermore, He, the Almighty, says: "They will not cease to differ. Except him on whom your Lord has bestowed His Mercy (the follower of truth - Islamic Monotheism); and for that, He created them." (Surah Hud, 11:118-119) They are those who do not differ, for Allah has bestowed His Mercy upon them.

Imam Malik said: "The latter part of this Ummah will not be reformed except by that which reformed its earlier part." There is no salvation except in adhering to the Book, the Sunnah, and what the righteous predecessors adhered to in every time and place. May Allah guide everyone to what is right.

And may Allah send blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
